The city is a rapidly growing short-break tourist destination - take a look and you'll see why.
Newcastle has a fine architectural legacy dating from the 12th century,
including the Quayside with its view of six bridges, and the Grainger Town
area of classical buildings from the 1830's, 60% of them listed. The city's
wealth of museums have scooped national awards for their lively exhibitions.
The historic Theatre Royal and 10,000-seater Newcastle Arena are two of 30
performance art venues, capable between them of staging events, comedy and
dance festivals that draw the biggest names. As new features appear such as
the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art (opened July 2002) there is even more
choice.
Eldon Square and Northumberland Street are both in the top ten for turnover
in retail centres nationally. The MetroCentre in Gateshead remains one of
the largest shopping complexes in Europe.
Newcastle's 300-plus pubs, restaurants and night clubs packed into a spectacular
square mile have earned it the accolade of being eighth best party city in the
world by American tour experts Weissman Travel.
