Covering just 11,317 sq. km (4,369 sq. miles), Murcia is one of Spain's
smallest comunidades. Compared with its larger neighbours, Andalusia and
the Comunidad Valenciana, Murcia is little known but it has its superlatives
too. Murcia, the capital, stands inland in a fertile agricultural region.
At the heart of the city is the catedral (open daily; free), built in stages
on the foundations of a former mosque between the 14th and 18th centuries.
Notable features of the cathedral include its great baroque façade and two
exquisite side chapels. The cathedral museum is also worth a visit for its
Gothic altarpieces and Roman frieze.
