About Turin
Turin is the provincial capital of Piedmont one of the largest regions
in Italy. Piedmont accounts for the vast majority of the north-western
area of Italy and is home to more than 4.5million million people, most
of whom live in and around Turin.
Turin is well known as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. It was
for centuries the capital of the Savoy Dynasty and much of the ancient Savoy
residences such as the Royal Madama Palace, Carignano Palace, and Valentino
Castle survive to enhance the beauty of its city centre. Other examples such
as the Stupinigi Hunting Lodge, the Racconigi and Aglie Castles can be found
in the countryside. Fabulous art collections from this period that loved art
so much can be found in the Egyptian Museum and the Royal Armory.
The world famous Shroud of Turin can be found in the Turin Cathedral whilst other
sites of religeous interest include The Ranverso, Vezzolano, and Novalesa Abbeys
and the Sant'Andrea Basilica in Vercelli.
The region as a whole offers a host of excellent tourist facilities and
attractions. The mountains guarantees excellent facilities for all types
of winter sports and the fantastic lakes and rivers provide a beautiful
backdrop to a host of other year round activities. The regions of the Langhe
and Monferrato are home to a number of castles and quiet, picturesque villages
. If opulent mansions and palaces with lush gardens are your desire, the famous
Villa Taranto at Pallanza is a particularly upper market attraction, as is
much of the area surrounding Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta.
Piedmont is also known for its excellent gastronomically talents. World-famous
wines and cheese are complemented by choice meats and rice combined in a range
of delicious local recipes.
