About Paderborn

Founded by Charlemagne in 777, Paderborn was long one of the major royal and Episcopal seats during the German Middle Ages. The imperial castle and the cathedral bear witness to that era. In 1614, the first university of Westphalia was built there. Following the Thirty Years War, many new buildings sprang up under the tutelage of the prince-bishops. Paderborn remains a rural city, but since the Second World War it has become a centre for teaching and research.
